Every golf club manufacturer should fall to their knees each morning and say a quiet prayer of thanks to Eli Callaway, because it was he who persuaded golfers that paying £300 for a single club (although prices have stabilised recently) was acceptable.
Callaway started the whole over-sized clubhead craze back in 1989 with the original Big Bertha and was so successful that within six years it became the market leader in woods and irons. Since then the company has made a succession of good drivers which are still characterised by the ease with which they can be swung, and their degree of forgiveness from off-centre hits.
In addition to pioneering over-sized clubheads, Callaway introduced the bore-through shaft in which the shaft of the club, instead of being attached to the clubhead, penetrates through it. This offered greater stability during the swing and reduced weight at the point where clubhead meets shaft - and that weight could then be better distributed.
In addition, the face of the clubhead is slightly "closed", which helps counteract the slice that afflicts 85% of golfers, and the 11° head with the regular Fujikura shaft is probably the best option. Callaway has also never forgotten women, and makes extremely good clubs for them, too.
