New bathrooms being fitted as part of local initiative
The country's employment market remains subdued despite the fact that the recession has officially been over for some time. Some argue the government's austerity measures designed to reduce the fiscal deficit are causing further problems and are slowing the recovery.
However, the Homes & Communities Agency, which is the national housing and regeneration delivery agency for England, recently awarded funding to regeneration and housing firm Coast & Country to help with a scheme to help residents get back into work.
Under the terms of the arrangement, landlords who own long-term empty properties in the Redcar and Cleveland area in the north-east are being offered a package of refurbishment work. Local unemployed people are being trained in various renovation skills. For example, they are being taught how to revamp bathrooms. As part of this, they may find themselves installing new bathroom radiators and other such items.
Commenting on the idea, chief executive at Coast & Country Iain Sim said: "This scheme operates on two important levels. One is to help people learn construction skills to help improve their chances of finding work and the other is to make more affordable housing available to Redcar and Cleveland residents."
Meanwhile, neighbourhood renewal councillor Lynne Pallister added: "[The initiative] helps tackle those properties that can have a negative impact on the local community, helps increase the supply of affordable housing in East Cleveland and also provides valuable work experience for local unemployed people."
Also commenting on the project, Carl Ditchburn from social enterprise Community Campus 87 said it is helping to build people's confidence and equipping them with skills to enhance their work prospects. Those involved have shown commitment and focus, he added.
As well as fitting new bathrooms and bathroom radiators, the trainees are also getting experience of operating in kitchens and of wallpapering, painting and decorating.
